Hiking and Hygge
November 16th – 19th 2018
When it comes to winter do you sometimes wish you could just crawl under the duvet and stay there until the spring? If the answer is yes, then this is the retreat for you! Get ready for a weekend of pure and utter comfort and indulgence. This is the ultimate hygge experience! A long weekend of roaring fires, candlelit yoga, cosy pub dinners and beautiful hiking in the gorgeous central Lakes.
You take a leisurely start to your day with a hot steaming shower and a cup of organic tea/coffee whilst taking in the beautiful scenery from your ensuite room.
Afterwards you head downstairs to enjoy a delicious home cooked freshly prepared breakfast in our private dining room overlooking the beautiful grounds of our luxury bed and breakfast. Suitably replenished you then get ready to head out onto the stunning fells of the central Lakes for a day of magnificent hiking guaranteed to blow away the cobwebs and leave you with a sense of achievement. You soak in all the peace and tranquillity on offer whilst enjoying the breath-taking scenery at every turn.
At around 3.30pm you begin your descent back down towards our luxury lake side accommodation and watch as the sun begins to set behind the mountains tops.
You return from your hike to enjoy a gorgeous restorative yoga session with Lucy in our very own eco pod surrounded by candle light and the warming glow of the log burner. A great opportunity to fully unwind from the day and loosen up those tired limbs. Grab your woolly socks and a blanket and get ready for some serious hygge!
You then take yourself off for either a long relaxing shower or a luxurious soak in your roll top bath before heading out to dinner at the local gastro pub where we cosy up by the fire and enjoy a two-course heart-warming feast and a glass of wine (or two) before heading back for a hot chocolate snuggled up under a blanket or perhaps even a stroll up to the lake in the moonlight.
You retire to bed feeling fully relaxed and able to enjoy a blissful night’s sleep ready to do it all again tomorrow.
Hiking and Hygge is a brand new retreat for 2018 which brings together all my favourite things about winter. Cosy fires, beautiful winter walks, hearty comfort food and plenty of rest and relaxation.
This retreat is designed so that not only do you get to enjoy a weekend of good food, good company and no doubt some much needed relaxation, but that you also leave having experienced a sense of achievement. That you leave less afraid to experience new adventures and more inclined to live life to it’s fullest.

Meet Your Hosts…
Paula Lawson is a certified Health and Wellness coach with an immense passion for helping women to realise their own self worth.
Paula fell in love with hiking back in 2013 after a week long holiday in the Lake District and has never looked back.
As well as hiking, Paula is a firm believer in the Danish concept of Hygge. During the winter her home is a cosy snug of roaring fires, candlelight and delicious comfort food!
“As someone who can struggle with the darker months, I know how important it is to both spend time outdoors and to prioritise self care. To be able to offer a retreat that allows clients to do both, for me, is the perfect winter antidote.”
Cliff Lowther is our lead instructor/guide on all our retreats and is an extremely experienced adventurer having been involved with adventure based activities throughout his life.
Professionally, he has used adventure and the outdoors as a vehicle for personal development with all his clients for over 35 years and has led expeditions to countries including Cambodia, Ecuador and Peru.
The outdoors is, simply put, Cliff’s passion in life. Whether it’s wandering the mountains of the Lake District or ice climbing in Norway. As well as being the seasoned professional he is incredibly supportive, friendly and knows how to get the best out of you
Lucy Steel is our talented young yoga instructor currently based in County Durham. A lover of the outdoors you will frequently find Lucy striking all kinds of amazing yoga poses in some incredible locations (check out her instagram!).
Lucy fell in love with yoga after many years of struggling to find peace with herself, both body and mind. It would be the foundation of what was to be a turning point in her life. Seeing the difference that yoga had made in her own life Lucy was inspired to go on and become an instructor herself. Lucy’s classes are centred around her students, aiming to support them in calming the mind, body and breath in order to find peace and calm within.
If the concept of ‘hygge’ is all about cozy contentment then food has to play a big part in that. There’s one thing for sure, you won’t be going hungry on this retreat!
Our hosts at Lake View Country House pride themselves on the quality of the produce they use. They will be providing us with a beautiful spread each morning for breakfast as well as our two course evening meal in the local gastro pub.
You’ll also be provided with a gourmet packed lunch for your hiking each day.
In your room you will be provided with a delicious selection of luxury chocolates and snacks to enjoy at your leisure with your tea and coffee.
Set in an acre of gardens and wildlife, Lake View Country House is a family run seven bedroom luxury bed and breakast nestled in the heart of beautiful Grasmere village.
With it’s very own private access to the lake this luxury bed and breakfast makes for the perfect weekend escape.
Each of the seven bedrooms contains super comfortable oak beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, smart TV, and a luxury bathroom (one room has a gorgeous jacuzzi bath perfect for post hiking relaxation) as well as it’s very own tea making facilities with a wide variety of organic tea and coffee and delicious treats.
Guests will arrive from 4pm onwards . Once you’ve settled in and had a chance to freshen up you can join us in the breakfast room for a glass or two of prosecco to welcome you and toast to the weekend ahead. Feel free to take a walk down to the lake and to have a look around or just simply sit back and enjoy this beautiful setting.
Once all our guests have arrived and settled we will take some time to get to know one another and run through the itinerary for the weekend. At 7pm we will head over the road to the local gastro pub for dinner where we will enjoy our two course evening meal nestled in by the fire. The rest of the evening is then yours to relax as you choose. Maybe take a long hot soak in your roll top bath or get cosied up with a good book.
Saturday/Sunday morning will begin with breakfast at around 8.00am. At 9.30am Cliff Lowther our mountain guide will join us and run through the hike that he has planned for the day.
We’ll then head up and out of the valley, and very quickly will be taking in some exquisite views. If you have never hiked before it’s at this point that you’ll quickly realise why it is has become one of my favourite past times and why I often find myself craving being back on the hills.
We will aim to arrive back at Lake View for approx 4.00pm for a quick freshen up before Lucy leads us in a 60min candle lit yoga and relaxation session in the eco pod to help us to stretch those tired muscles and fully unwind.
Between 5.30pm and 7pm the time is yours to relax and get ready for dinner. At 7pm we will head across to the gastro pub for another delicious two course evening meal before heading back to Lakeview for a well earned good nights sleep.
This morning will begin with a gentle yoga session with Lucy in the eco pod at around 8am before we enjoy a final leisurely breakfast at around 9am.
At 11am we will check out of Lake View and say our goodbyes leaving you the perfect opportunity to have a look around Grasmere village before you head home feeling relaxed and replenished.
Do I need to be an experienced walker to take part in the retreat?
Not at all. The walk is designed at a beginners level. Our experienced Mountain Leader, Cliff Lowther, recommends that in order to fully enjoy the experience participants should be able to comfortably walk a minimum of 10miles on flat ground (approx 3 hours) without any real concerns. This weekend is specifically designed for those that have little to no experience of hiking and who want to take the opportunity to try it.
Will I need to bring any specialist equipment?
A recommended packing list will be provided to ensure that you have everything that you need to fully enjoy the weekend but you will of course need a good pair of comfortable hiking boots and a set of waterproofs for your hiking.
How will I get there?
If you arriving by car the journey is approx 90 min from Scotch Corner Services on the A1. We will be providing full directions of how to get there.
Trains to the Lake District terminate at Windermere railway station. From Windermere take the 505 or 599 bus to Grasmere.
For timetable information, call 0871 200 22 33 or visit Traveline or Cumbria County Council websites.
Are you able to cater for special dietary requirements?
We are able to cater for most dietary requirements as all food is prepared fresh but please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss further.
Does it matter if I haven’t taken part in a yoga class before?
Our yoga sessions are all about restoring mind, body and soul whilst gently helping the body to wind down after a full day out on the hills. The sessions will be suitable for all abilities including complete beginners and our yoga instructor Lucy will be able to adapt any moves if necessary.
Who can I contact if I have any further questions?
If you should have further questions at all then please don’t hesitate to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I understand that for those of you that may never have hiked before you might be a little nervous about doing something out of your comfort zone but trust me when I say you will love every second of it. If your heart is saying go for it then trust it. We often allow ourselves to completely overthink our decisions and focus too much on why we shouldn’t do something rather than why we should. For once, trust your heart and know that this is what you need in your life right at this moment.
